Think I finally came to the conclusion that daily notes don't work for me in #obsidian. I think I should move to themed logs like @eleanorkonik suggests. Does anyone have any tips for that?
I don't have any tips, but I would love to see some, too.
I like having notes related to a day, but I can do that by adding links back to a daily page from the themed logs, or just by using date-based headers.
I have already switched to a themed log for some of my work stuff where I have a page and a new h2 for each day, under which I log notes, activities, etc.
It is getting unwieldy, though, and needs more separation, and I'm getting stuck on the way forward.
@erankatz @eleanorkonik Just curious - what about daily notes don't work for you and what were you hoping to find something to help with?
@nicole @eleanorkonik I wanted to have some sense of how I'm doing on a daily basis. What did I do that day? How I felt and stuff like that. which works perfectly fine with a daily note. But I noticed that I just don't go into the note as often to fill stuff up. It became a bit of a burden. And mostly I tried to have dataview fields that would aggregate into their own logs. So I figured I could just have the logs themselves.
@nicole @eleanorkonik I do wonder what kind of themed logs I should have and also how would I remember to actually fill them up? This is a habit that I need to work on
@erankatz @eleanorkonik Have you considered creating a QuickAdd command to quickly capture things into your daily note wothout leaving the note you're on? Would that work for you?
@nicole I have that for logging actions. It's less that and more of the fact that I just don't get back to them. And tbh some days I don't write at all. I think a weekly consolidated note could be a good solution.
@erankatz I see. Honestly, I often don't go back to daily notes either! I still find them useful as a way to log my day, and I can always search for stuff if I need to.
@erankatz @nicole @eleanorkonik I've found iOS shortcuts to be a great way to capture into my daily log - just include some logic to append to the relevant log (easy to know the name when its date based), and you can add other relevant metadata automatically at the same time as well. You can even dictate straight in if you want.

When I open Obsidian for the day, I open my Daily note and anything I plan to do gets brain dumped there. I keep it open and use it like a scratch pad, b*tch pad, and if I find I've written something useful in Discord or elsewhere, I paste it in. It's quick, dirty and messy but I've been able to see what I've tried to do each day and get a feel for my emotional state too. The last thing I do before leaving the computer is scribbling a few lines or just an emoji.
@erankatz @eleanorkonik I set up a daily note and brain dump stuff there, then go back later and disseminate the segments to where they need to go. is that the best way? probably not. does it work for me? better than any other system i've tried
@chromatic @erankatz @eleanorkonik this is more or less what I do too. Works for me too! (I use the “text transporter” plugin to make the transferring easier but that’s not critical)
@erankatz @eleanorkonik I only use daily notes for epehemeral things that won’t matter after today or which will be nice to look back on as a journal. Anything I actually want to remember in the future, I copy as a journal entry on the page for that topic… for example, on oct. 11 I make a hotel reservation for upcoming dance convention in nov. on the page for the dance convention I add a bullet with a link to oct. 11 then note the reservation (link to hotel page, confirmation no., etc).
@erankatz @eleanorkonik I have a template called “journal”. When I start a new note on, say, an upcoming dance convention, first I insert the template:
#### Journal
*
@erankatz @eleanorkonik then the bullet will get a link to the daily note, and under that date I’ll indent and add whatever the update for that day is. The page will “accrue” data about that topic over time, with links to the day each item happened or was added. (And inversely if I’m on one of those daily notes pages I’ll see a back link to the dance convention page)
