Curious what the community thinks of the Johnny Decimal system[1]?

I came across this years ago and it recently resurfaced.

Is anyone using this in their PKM software and successfully built workflows around it? It seems like an alternative to PARA and Zettelkasten.

@sacha thanks for the great insight!

As long as it gets the job done and you're happy with the workflow, that's perfectly fine.

My workflows are no clean implementation of any particular method either. I took parts that worked for me from this method, other parts from that method, developed some parts myself. For anybody who is able to do that kind of workflow development over time, that's perfect from my perspective!

@nielsk Zettelkasten and GTD are complementary, so probably no wonder it's not helping :)

Forte's #PARA/#BASB is a new take on GTD's ideas. Summary here:

I know the feeling of descending into chaos. It often helps to take time to cleanse the plate and remove things that say they need to be done, but are actually optional and irrelevant, like personal backlogs of tasks. Just because I wrote it down 5 months ago doesn't mean I really need to do it.

During #immigration, her #headdress was #seized.

For the #Amazonian woman who lives in #Pará, the #cocar (headdress) is not just an ornament, but a symbol of her identity, struggle and culture, which were hurt at the time. She pointed out that, as well as #racism being hard enough to deal with, suffering discrimination without being able to react and just letting it happen is a distressing experience.

“My headdress is my great ally in my struggles, it’s part of me. And since the origin of everything, it belongs to us, and that’s how it is for all native peoples”, she shared.

After a stint of going full digital - tasks, journaling, meeting notes - I really decided that I just miss the tactile feeling of writing things down, and the immense focus I can achieve when away from a screen.

Adopting a hybrid approach based on this article, and already I feel like it suits my sensibilities a little more.

Anyone else out there a paper/digital hybrid?

@Mollarom That's a question to which I want to post one of my usual encyclopedic responses. But I'll try my best to be brief (looks like this reply will split into 4 entries despite that, thanks to mastodon.social and it's inane 500-char post limit).

There are systems out there that purport to help you arrange your life and digital data - I have my own method which works for me, but a lot of people like Thiago Forte's #PARA method, or the "Johnny Decimal" system. You ...1/4

Some additional context: I've been using #Logseq and #PARA for professional life and both are fantastic. But I am struggling to conceptualize PARA for my #knowledge work. Basically, I can see it being useful to bring some #organization for my life but when it comes to articles, papers, and books for #academics and #writing, I don't feel like it is as useful. Maybe I'm too afraid to let go of my old systems but I just wanted to put a call out for ideas.

Started trying out both #Obsidian and #Logseq about a month or so ago as #PKM systems. In researching, I came across the #PARA method of organizing digital information.

'm finding it very interesting. It has made me think about the information I create and collect in new ways and how much time I've wasted trying to create the perfect organizational system.

However, I would love to do a deep dive into other systems or methods.

Any suggestions?
